What Veterans Need to Know About Medicare Coverage

By Darin Davis, U.S. Army Veteran and Humana Veterans Executive-

During the Medicare Advantage Annual Election Period (AEP), which runs Oct. 15-Dec. 7, individuals eligible for Medicare can select their health insurance plan for the following year. For veterans, this can be a confusing time, especially if they receive benefits through Veterans Affairs.

As someone who works closely with veterans to help them understand the role of Medicare, I am sharing some of the questions I receive most often.

If I have health care benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs, do I need to enroll in Medicare when I become eligible?

Yes, the VA encourages you to enroll in Medicare to complement your VA health care benefits. If you need care from a non-VA hospital or doctor, Medicare can provide coverage. Having a Medicare plan means you have coverage if funding for VA health care changes in the future.

If the VA only authorizes certain services at a non-VA or VA authorized care facility, Medicare may cover additional services the VA can’t.

If you cancel Medicare Part B coverage, you cannot choose a Medicare Advantage plan until January of the following year (when you can enroll in Part B), even if your VA health care benefits change. A delay in Part B enrollment means a financial penalty when you sign up.

With Medicare Part D, which is coverage for prescription drugs, you will have the option to get medication prescribed by non-VA doctors and use your local pharmacy. Part D coverage is only available through private insurers and can be a stand-alone plan or part of a Medicare Advantage plan.

What’s the difference between Medicare and Medicare Advantage?

Original fee-for-service Medicare is the government-managed program and only includes Part A (hospitals) and Part B (doctors and outpatient services). Medicare Advantage plans, offered through private insurance companies, include Parts A and B and additional benefits that could help reduce gaps in coverage. For example, Humana USAA Honor plans, available to anyone eligible for Medicare, are designed with veterans in mind and include a $0 monthly plan premium, Part B Medicare premium reduction, worldwide coverage for emergency care, a limit on out-of-pocket costs, and dental, vision and hearing coverage.

What should I consider when looking at plan options?

Evaluate the costs of the plans available in your area, including monthly premiums, deductibles, copayments, and maximum out-of-pocket amounts. Review your total health care expenses from the past year and anticipate what you may spend in the coming year.

Original Medicare provides coverage through any provider that accepts Medicare; however, it typically only covers about 80% of the cost, with no limits for your portion. Medicare Advantage plans include maximum out-of-pocket costs, but they use provider networks, so verify your health care providers participate with the plan.

Additionally, review your medication needs. Original Medicare does not include prescription drug coverage, while many Medicare Advantage plans include it. However, if you receive prescriptions through the VA and are satisfied with your coverage, you may want to explore Medicare Advantage plans without prescription drug coverage.

Where can I go to get more information?

Look to credible sources, such as Medicare.gov or licensed sales agents, to compare plans and estimate costs. Veterans and Medicare households have access to Humana Customer Care specialists who collaborated with USAA to receive special training to better serve the unique healthcare needs of veterans. Visit Humana.com/Medicare/Veterans or call toll-free 1-833-585-8387 (VETS) (TTY: 711) 8 a.m.-8 p.m., seven days a week to speak to a Customer Care specialist or connect with a licensed sales agent.

Disclaimers: Humana is a Medicare Advantage HMO, PPO, and PFFS organization and a stand-alone PDP prescription drug plan with a Medicare contract. Enrollment in any Humana plan depends on contract renewal. The Part B Giveback Benefit pays part or all of your Part B premium and the amount may change based on the amount you pay for Part B. Humana Insurance Company pays royalty fees to USAA for the use of its intellectual property. USAA means United Services Automobile Association and its affiliates. Use of the term “USAA member” or “USAA membership” refers to membership in USAA Membership Services and does not convey any legal or ownership rights in USAA. Restrictions apply and are subject to change. USAA and the USAA Logo are registered trademarks of the United Services Automobile Association. All rights reserved. No Department of Defense or government agency endorsement. The Humana USAA Honor plans are available to anyone eligible for Medicare and veterans should consider all of their health plan options.

Outline of Episode:

Military Money Manual Podcast Episode #100

[00:00:00] Spencer: You now own a small piece of every publicly traded company in America, which is awesome, which is huge. And I don't think a lot of people recognize that when they say “Oh, I own the C and the S fund.” Think about what's actually inside those funds. It's not just numbers on a screen.

It's an Apple Store employee in New York City who just sold the new iPhone for $1,500.

I'm Spencer Reese from militarymoneymanual.com joined today by Jamie.

Hey Jamie.

And we are sitting here on the beautiful island of Lana’i, little business trip, little corporate retreat for the Military Money Manual podcast.

And we're recording a couple episodes in person. Very excited about that. Yes.

In this episode, we're going to take someone who just joined the military, whether you're enlisted or commissioned, we want to take you through your first two years with a Thrift Savings Plan or TSP. I know I ignored the TSP for a long time when I first joined the military because I didn't understand it.

And if someone had sat me down and had explained it to me, I think I would have realized what a great deal it was. And I would start investing in it a lot earlier.

[00:01:28] Jamie: Yeah, I remember starting out, I think maybe a year or two after active duty for me, I started with maybe a $50 contribution or something because someone told me you should be contributing to it, probably just in passing or I saw an article or something like that.

So I knew I needed to start but didn't really know what to do with it. So I didn't really have any guidance on where to go.

[00:01:49] Spencer: Yeah, I knew what an IRA was. I knew what a Roth IRA was, I was investing in that, but I, and at the time I wasn't in BRS, right? I wasn't in the  Blended Retirement System.

But now anybody who's joined the military after 2018 is in the Blended Retirement System. And so congratulations, you get matching on your TSP contributions. And in fact, you're going to get automatic TSP contributions, they're just going to be taken out of your paycheck and put into your TSP account. So it behooves you to understand where your money is going, right? And how you want to invest it.

Now, if you're an old timer listening to this, you're going to remember the old TSP system. When you contributed, it automatically went into the G fund and that wasn't such a great deal. We'll get into that a little bit later in the podcast, but the new system is a much better deal for our military service members and everybody has to participate if you're in the Blended Retirement System. So it makes sense to understand the TSP because you're a participant.

[00:02:45] Jamie: It affects everyone. So we're going to talk today about some of the basics of the TSP. What it is, what is the Blended Retirement System, where does money come from, whether it's from you or from the federal government.

What types of funds are available and maybe some strategies for how you can increase your investing potential over the years, whether you do a two year career or a 20 year career.

[00:03:07] Spencer: So Jamie, what's the difference between somebody in the reading the news or might hear about an IRA or a 401k? Where's the TSP fit into the  investing universe?

[00:03:17] Jamie: So when you hear TSP, it's Pretty much like a 401k. It is an employer sponsored retirement plan, an IRA, whether it's Roth or traditional. A lot of times people think an Roth IRA is its own thing and it is, but it's just a flavor of an IRA, Individual Retirement Account. You put your own money into that arrangement.

The I R S has certain benefits for that. You will have certain benefits for contributing to that over your lifetime. But the 401k or the TSP, the Thrift Savings Plan, is employer sponsored. That means it's through your company, your spouse or your cousins or anyone that's not in the military would go to HR to talk about their company's 401k and what funds are offered and things like that.

All of that is the TSP for people working for the federal government, like you military service members.

[00:04:04] Spencer: Yeah, and Jamie, you mentioned that there are two different flavors of IRA. There's also two different flavors of the TSP, right?

[00:04:11] Jamie: Absolutely.

The two big flavors, if you want to think of them that way, are the Roth or traditional.

It just impacts when you pay the taxes and how your money grows and then is taxed or not taxed later on in the future. So if you're looking at Roth contributions in the TSP or in your IRA, it's the same thing. This is named after the senator that passed the legislation for this. So a Roth fund will give you the ability to pay taxes now.

And then it grows tax free and then when you pull the money out at retirement you don't pay any taxes on all that money where a large majority of that at a traditional retirement age is going to be growth. And you don't pay any taxes on the growth of those dollars because you pay taxes on them today and then 40, 50 years from now you take it out tax free.

[00:04:55] Spencer: And then the other one is traditional. So you're going to. You get tax benefits today, you pay your taxes in the future, so you don't have to pay your taxes now and that might be beneficial if you're expecting to have a lower taxable income or lower tax rate in retirement, which it depends if you're a high income earner, let's say you're making, quarter million or a half million dollars a year, you can probably make a pretty safe bet that your tax rate in retirement is going to be lower than what you're currently making.

But if you're in the military, we have the advantage that most of our income is tax free. Plus, with the standard deduction and everything else, military service members have a very low effective tax rate. So for 99 percent of military service members, especially if you just joined, you just enlisted, you just commissioned, The Roth TSP is going to be better for new military service members.

So I recommend that military service members make their contributions to the Roth TSP account.

[00:05:53] Jamie: And then the last basic that I want to cover is that inside of the TSP, it's really just like a bank account if you want to think of it like that. You still have investment vehicles or options inside of your Thrift Savings Plan.

So it's not enough to just send money to the TSP. without knowing where it's actually going. And so we're going to talk about that in a few minutes, but it's just an overarching theme with a lot of options underneath for how you actually employ and invest your money.

[00:06:18] Spencer: Okay, so let's take someone who just commissioned or enlisted in the military and let's take them through the first two years of their participation in the TSP plan.

Jamie, what's happening day one?

[00:06:31] Jamie: So on day one, for anyone that joined after October 1st of 2020, The military is automatically going to enroll you in the TSP Lifecycle Fund at 5 percent contributions. And it's funny because now you can opt out of that 5%, but now the military is going to re-enroll you at 5 percent every January 1st.

So it just goes to show you how important it is to at least get something there. And 5 percent is a good starting point for a lot of people that the military automatically enrolls you there and then wants you to be there again. If you ever turn it off every January, every calendar year, they're going to reset you at 5%.

[00:07:07] Spencer: Yeah. So for most people, like their first day in the military, it's probably at basic training, right? Some kind of basic military training we call it BMT in the Air Force or bootcamp or whatever. If you commission, you've probably completed all of your initial military training during your schooling during your college, or you went to OTS or something Officer Training School And so maybe if you're in boot camp, you probably don't have access to a computer to go create a TSP account But once you do have access to a computer or if you just commissioned and you have time you can go to TSP.gov. You can create an account and once you have a TSP account you can log in there, you can adjust how your money is allocated, where your funds are going, when TSP gets money from your paycheck, and then you can log into MyPay, which is the Defense Finance Accounting Service, or DFAS.

They're the guys who pay all of us, whether you're an Army, Marine, Navy. Air Force, you get paid through DFAS. The website, it's called MyPay, you can just Google it, it'll pop up, MyPay Military, and you can adjust the amount that you want to contribute and make any changes to your contribution, whether it's Roth or traditional contributions, you can make that through the MyPay website.

[00:08:25] Jamie: So eventually you'll need two accounts, one for tsp.gov and then your MyPay account. TSP is more for monitoring and making small adjustments inside of your account, but thinking more of statement balances. And MyPay is, you set the percentage you want of your pay, percentage of your basic pay, percentage of special pay, and whether you want it to Roth or traditional contributions.

That's all done in MyPay.

[00:08:46] Spencer: Okay, Jamie. So this takes us to day 60 now, which is another milestone in your first two years participating in the thrift savings plan. And this is when automatic 1 percent contributions kick in under the Blended Retirement System or BRS. So that's money that does not come out of your pay.

That is also known as an agency contribution. And basically, the Department of Defense says we are automatically going to kick 1 percent of your pay from a different pot of money. It doesn't come from your paycheck. So if you're paid $1,000 a month They're going to put $10 a month into your BRS just as your 1 percent on a Mac contribution that starts on day 60.

Then after 24 months now you finish your first two years in the military you are eligible to start receiving matching and what the matching does is it adds an additional 4 percent of your basic pay up to a total of 5 percent. So the 1 percent automatic you always get that whether you're contributing to your TSP or not, but if you want to get that additional 4 percent of matching, you have to contribute at least 5 percent of your base pay or special pay or whatever.

But you have to contribute 5 percent of your pay to the TSP in order to get the full agency matching.

[00:10:03] Jamie: Yeah, remember you can contribute more than 5%, which eventually you might want to work up to, but 5 percent if you're brand new to the military is a great place to start. Don't limit yourself to that even though you only get a 5 percent match.

And remember, the percentages are also based off of your base pay. So even if you get BAH, BAS, incentive pay for your career field or anything like that, it's only based off of a percentage of your base pay.

Okay, so this money is going in from me and from the agency. Now, Spencer, do I actually get to keep all of that money?

I've heard a term called vesting. When am I vested in my contributions?

[00:10:38] Spencer: Yeah, so vesting means that you as a participant in the Thrift Savings Plan, the TSB, you're eligible to keep all the money from your accounts when you leave your job. For military service members, All of your contributions are automatically vested.

Anything that you put into the TSP, you get to walk away with at any point in time when you leave the military. Even if you only, I don't know, some crazy thing, you enlist and you only serve a year, you're still going to keep all of your contributions over that year. The 1 percent auto contributions, which start on day 60, You're eligible to keep those after two years of service and then the additional four percent matching contributions.

You're eligible to keep those Immediately, but remember that you don't get those four percent additional matching contributions until you've been in for two years of service. So you can think of it as okay. I get it immediately, but I already served two years. So basically vesting for anything that the DOD is kicking into your account not out of your paycheck, but on their own behalf, you're going to have to wait two years to get that

BBBC23 Inspires Action

The 5th Annual Business Beyond the Battlefield Conference (BBBC23) continued its success as a premier business development experience for military-connected entrepreneurs. The University of Texas Arlington Veterans Business Outreach Center (UTAVBOC) hosted the event in the American Dream City. More than 280 registered participants from 23 states were educated, trained and inspired during the annual three-day event, which included professionally curated business-to-business networking opportunities, a small business marketplace and an entrepreneur training symposium designed to increase awareness of and facilitate access to entrepreneurial development resources that inspire action leading to military-connected business formation, growth, or recovery.

The conference was more than a social gathering and included the Military Entrepreneur Challenge (MEC) powered by the Second Service Foundation. MEC is a three-part event led by the Second Service Foundation with support from its partners: the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Community Navigator Pilot Program, the D’Aniello Institute for Veterans and Military Families, Holland & Knight LLP and the Brewing the American Dream Program by Sam Adams. MEC includes a speed coaching session, a private pitch session to a judging panel and finally, an opportunity to pitch business ideas to a live audience for a chance to win a small business grant.

Bryant “Griff” Griffith is a Marine Corps veteran and the founder and CEO of JAWS – Junk And Waste Solutions. He is one of twelve cohort members in the UTAVBOC Spark for Veterans Incubator, where the curriculum included pitch preparation. Griff and five other cohort members were among the nine business owners selected to pitch in the MEC at BBBC23. Five cohort members were awarded $1,000 grants.

Griffith was the overall MEC winner at BBC23, receiving a $2,000 grant, a $5,000 promotional package and $20,000 of in-kind legal services from Holland & Knight LLP. “Waste removal is about more than picking up trash. I will use the MEC award to launch the JAWS franchise model and “pick up the lives” of veterans in Florida and Ohio,” said Griffith. Patrick E. Alcorn, senior director of the UTAVBOC, commented, “Griff’s business success and his desire to empower other veterans is an example of the military-connected entrepreneur ecosystem at its best, i.e., veterans empowering veterans.”

UTAVBOC provides collaborative, hands-on, interactive learning opportunities, including classroom instruction and opportunities to work with experienced coaches and mentors, attend workshops and develop connections. Through training programs, one-on-one business counseling, accredited university courses, practical seminars, relevant workshops, expert referrals and veteran-focused outreach activities, UTAVBOC serves as the SBA resource for veterans. UTAVBOC services are funded in part through a cooperative agreement with the SBA to empower transitioning veterans, disabled veterans, National Guard, active and reserve component members and their spouses to grow the U.S. economy and its employment base while adding value to the communities in which they live and serve.

The UTAVBOC Spark for Veterans Program provides six months of free coworking space (in Arlington, Texas) with in-person, interactive, facilitated incubator technical assistance, followed by six months of one-on-one business counseling, practical seminars, relevant workshops, pitch competition preparation and expert referrals to a nationwide network of mentors and capital partners. Additionally, program participants gain a dedicated cohort of eight to 12 peers who hold each other accountable for business growth and success. Applications are now open for the January 2024 cohort at alcornttg.leadingthebest.com/CL0002.

The Second Service Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports military entrepreneurs through coaching, resources, capital and an innovative mentorship program to help entrepreneurs scale from startup to the stars. Launched in 2016 on Veterans Day, The Second Service Foundation (formerly StreetShares Foundation) set out to provide comprehensive resources for military community entrepreneurs. They are cultivating the American Dream for military businesses. As a private foundation, they aim to inspire, educate and support veterans, military spouses and Gold Star families as they grow their enterprise.

From Military Family to Family Entrepreneurs

Edward and Christina Sledge founded Sledge House Media, a Maryland-based entertainment company created to share diverse and captivating stories through books, films and TV, plus digital and audio projects that highlight relationships, individual experiences and interconnection. Their strength as a couple—married for 23 years and together since high school has formed a solid foundation for their business and allowed them to infuse their projects with the love and commitment they share. Together the Sledge’s have published eight books, four audiobooks and two short films (winning three awards for best documentary short film in their indie film festival run), with more exciting projects on the horizon.

U.S. Veterans Magazine (USVM) sat down with the power couple to learn how the Sledge’s experiences as a military family prepared them for entrepreneurship and why they decided to start a small business after Edward completed his service with the Army.

USVM: Can you discuss how your military service and life as an Army family have influenced your entrepreneurial journey? How have the skills and experiences you gained in the Army shaped your approach to business?

Edward Sledge (ES): I enlisted in the U.S. Army in January 1999 and completed basic training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. My duty station was Fort Stewart, Georgia where I was assigned to two Field Artillery units, 1-41 and 1-9. I was promoted to specialist before I was honorably and medically discharged. My wife and I got married in February 2000 after only a two-month engagement. We quickly started to grow our family, subsequently adapting to Army life. We later wrote and published our memoir in 2021 about our journey and that prompted us to start an entertainment company.

From my military service and our life as an Army family we learned dedication, initiative, sacrifice, effective communication, patience, resilience, collaboration and resolve—which are also qualities needed to become entrepreneurs. Our approach to business is highly influenced by our experience as an Army family. Specifically, defining and organizing our business processes and operations effectively and efficiently.

USVM: How have you demonstrated adaptability in your military and entrepreneurial endeavors?

ES: In the military, I quickly adapted to new environments and collaborated with various Soldiers with different ranks, skill sets and backgrounds. Similarly, in our small business we utilize the ability to adapt to new situations and work side by side with various people to complete our projects every day.

USVM: Can you share a team-oriented project or initiative you were involved in during your military service and how it relates to your approach to teamwork as an entrepreneur? How do you two, as a couple, utilize teamwork to ensure the success of your projects?

ES: I recall during basic training at Fort Sill I worked with several new Soldiers to assemble two large modular general purpose tents. We successfully worked together to erect the tents braving the elements of high winds and rain. That experience is transferrable to my approach to teamwork now. In business, everyone takes turns to patiently pitch in to hold up their pole while the others work collaboratively to complete the task at hand.

As a couple, it is especially important to have open and honest discussions about your roles in the business. This exercise will help determine how to divide and conquer the work. When your roles are clearly defined it helps minimize confusion and disagreements. For example, I focus on the creative side while my wife focuses on the business side. We also think it is important to accentuate your individual strengths to work effectively as a team.

USVM: How does your sense of mission and purpose guide your entrepreneurial pursuits?

ES: Just like in the military, in our business we also set goals and metrics to complete our projects. This practice keeps us resolute and focused on our company’s mission.

USVM: What advice would you give someone considering entrepreneurship after transitioning from the military?

CS and ES: We would recommend becoming familiar with all the resources available to transitioning Soldiers and their families. We also recommend taking advantage of the GI Bill benefits offered to Soldiers. Edward earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, which he uses in our business, by using the GI Bill and Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits. Always remember that the skills you acquired during your military service will serve you well in a multitude of ways as you transition into entrepreneurship.

From Military to the Workforce: Building Your Resume

Resumes provide a historical snapshot of your experience, knowledge and skills. Recruiters should be able to review your resume and understand the work you have done, the length of your experience and your capabilities within a matter of minutes.

Resumes should encapsulate your experience as briefly as possible. Quantifying your experience can make them easier for recruiters to understand.

What’s in a resume? All good resumes include some standard information:

  • Contact information
  • Work experience
  • List of technical skills
  • Education
  • Job-related training
  • Languages
  • Affiliations
  • Professional publications
  • Honors and awards
  • Veterans’ preference
  • Level of clearance held

Contact Information

The first section of a cover letter should include your contact information, such as your name, address, preferred phone number and personal email address.

Work Experience

Your most recent experience should be listed first, and the rest of your experience should be listed in reverse chronological order. Experience typically includes the company or agency you worked for, the position you held, the dates you worked there and highlights of your responsibilities.

Unless you have not been working for very long, you have no reason to detail the jobs you held early in your career. Focus on your most recent and relevant positions.

Highlight any accomplishments or results of your work that will be relevant to the position, such as those that:

  • Required extra effort
  • You completed independently
  • Demonstrated expertise
  • Received recognition

These should emphasize results you produced, dollars generated or saved, percentage improvements in performance, the extent to which you exceeded goals in the past or organizational turnarounds you created.

List of Technical Skills

Technical skills can vary widely from methodologies to software or hardware. Technical skills do not often require explanation and can be listed by name; however, you must qualify your experience with each so that recruiters know your level of understanding of these skills. For example, a recruiter that is interested in process improvement will know about Six Sigma (a business management and process improvement methodology), so you will not have to explain it, but if you listed that, you should state what level belt you are and how long you have been practicing. The same rule applies to word processing and programming tools or hardware, such as servers.

Education

Your education information should only include pertinent facts such as:

  • Name of the institution where you earned your highest degree
  • City and state of the institution
  • Date you graduated or received the degree
  • Specific degree earned
  • Minors or double majors

If you attended college or a technical school but did not receive a degree, you should state how long you attended and your field of study. However, you must be clear that you did not receive a degree. If you did not attend college or a vocational school, you would include information about your high school education or GED. List your most recent degree first. If you are still enrolled in an institution, list it. Do not forget to include the anticipated date of graduation and the degree expected.

Job-Related Training

You have most likely received a significant amount of job-related training through the military. Provide details on the training and courses that you took throughout your career. List only the training that has enhanced your experience and skills, which will be of immense value in your new position. If the course title is not descriptive or is unfamiliar, summarize or briefly describe the course to potential resume evaluators. Don’t assume the resume evaluator will understand the terms in your resume. If there is any doubt, convey the meaning.

Languages

If you include languages on your resume, state your level of fluency (such as novice, intermediate or advanced). Do not overstate your level of proficiency. If your fluency is very limited, it is probably not worth listing the language.

Affiliations

Your professional affiliations can relate your past work and your current job profile if you are working in the same field. On a resume, they inform recruiters that you have a professional interest beyond your day-to-day job.

Emphasize current contributions and provide some details to explain your abilities within precise areas. It is recommended that you not include any political affiliations since hiring managers or an agency may fail to judge you enthusiastically. If you decide to include them anyway, be tactful in describing your involvement.

If you have a lot of affiliations on your resume, recruiters may view you as an overachiever. Consider including only the most relevant ones or splitting them into career-related and community-related categories.

Professional Publications

List your publications in reverse chronological order. Only list those publications that relate directly to your career goal or the position you are applying for. Potential employers may attempt to track down your publication, so make sure the titles and your authorship are verifiable before including them.

References

Be prepared to provide references if requested. References are typically people who can verify your employment and vouch for your performance. A potential employer always thinks that a provided resume is up-to-date. If your references are not up-to-date when the resume is reviewed, your out-of-date list may harm your credibility or frustrate your recruiter.

Honors and Awards

Awards can tell a potential employer that previous employers or other organizations valued your accomplishments. The fact that you or your team received formal recognition for your efforts is a good indicator of your skills and work ethic.

Additional Information

Any information that does not fit in the other resume subject areas but is worth highlighting for a recruiter because of its relevance to the position or because it helps you stand out as a qualified candidate can go in this catch-all area.

Military Money Manual Podcast Episode #99

[00:00:00] Jamie: The Delta SkyMiles American Express card is one of our favorite airline cards for military service members, and it's the best one for Delta, I think. With lounge access and a round trip first class companion pass and a waived annual fee for military members and their spouse, anyone who flies Delta once a year or more should be looking at the Delta Reserve card.

[00:00:18] Spencer: Hey, listener, welcome to another episode of the Military Money Manual podcast. Spencer Reese here from MilitaryMoneyManual.com joined in person by my co host, Jamie.

Hey, Jamie. In this next four part series, we're going to be going over the best airline credit cards for military service members.

And we're going to be looking at the big four US airlines of American airlines, Delta, Southwest, and United airlines.

Military service members, and military spouses have a unique benefit on credit cards for most of the airline credit cards we're going to talk about and in fact most credit cards your annual fees on the cards are waived down to zero dollars. So if you are active duty if you're a guard in reserve on 30 plus day active orders or if you're a military spouse married to any of the previous people I listed and you're properly listed in the Military Lending Act or MLA database, then you're going to get your annual fees waived on your Citi cards, your Chase cards, and your American Express cards.

So that's a fantastic military benefit and it allows you to access some of the benefits when we talk about today with airline credit cards like companion passes, miles, upgraded seats, lounge access, and you can access all these benefits through these credit cards and you don't have to pay any annual fees, unlike everybody else.

So fantastic military benefits that not a lot of people talk about.

So Jamie, which airline are we addressing on this inaugural first episode?

[00:02:03] Jamie: So we're going to start with Delta, which has a very powerful series of cards through American Express. They have four levels, but before we get into the specifics, remember that all of the benefits and offers we're talking about on this episode are current as of the time of the recording.

So to make sure you get the most current offer and terms and conditions, check out the militarymoneymanual.com for the latest.

[00:02:23] Spencer: And for example, Delta just updated their policies on lounge access and they put some really big changes into their SkyMiles program, which after a lot of people were very upset about it, they're now going to retract and some of it, some of the changes and have even more changes.

So anything we talk about today, make sure you go and Google, do your own research and make sure that it's current as of this recording. But it might not be current in the future.

[00:02:48] Jamie: Delta has four levels. All of these cards are with American Express, which like you said, Spencer, waives the annual fee for military service members and their spouses under the Military Lending Act. So all of these are free to you.

From the top tier to the lowest tier, it goes to the Delta Reserve, the Platinum, Gold, and Blue levels. So Spencer, let's start off by talking about the Delta Reserve card, the top tier card that they offer from their co-branded partnership.

[00:03:12] Spencer: Yeah, so if you're going to get one Delta card, and you're in the military or your military spouse eligible for Military Lending Act benefits, it should be the Delta Reserve card from American Express. It has a $550 annual fee, which like we talked about is fully waived.

If you're covered by the MLA, you can go listen to episode 19 and we covered Military Lending Act benefits in depth on that episode of the podcast.

On the Delta Reserve card, you're typically going to see a Delta SkyMiles bonus offer of somewhere between 50,000 all the way up to maybe 100,000 or 120,000 SkyMiles after you meet the minimum spend.

Typically, you'll have four, maybe six months to meet the minimum spend. At the time of this recording, we're looking at 60,000 Delta SkyMiles after spending 5,000 in the first six months. I don't think that's a great offer. I think if you're listening to this episode, and that's the current offer, just wait a little bit.

Delta tends to do limited time offers every three to six months or so, and they do a lot of targeted mailing offers, too. So if you get an offer in the mail, just Google real quick Hey, is this a good, is this a good offer? And remember that SkyMiles never expire, but that doesn't make them any more valuable, right?

It's not like you can invest your SkyMiles and get a rate of return on them. SkyMiles are definitely one of those points of currency that you want to earn and then burn. You want to use them quickly. Because Delta has a history of devaluing the program and making your SkyMiles worth less and less. In fact, going all the way back to 2010, when I first dove into the SkyMiles program, I encountered the term SkyPesos that some people in the travel hacking community use because SkyMiles are so worthless.

[00:04:45] Jamie: We'll talk more in a few minutes about why earning SkyMiles might not be the best primary goal for your travel hacking game. It is nice to know that they never expire so you don't have to feel the pressure to fly again with them. But one of my favorite benefits is the SkyClub lounge access that comes with it.

So right now, pending changes, you have as a card member, you get into the Delta Sky Club Lounge. You also get access as an American Express Platinum cardholder flying on a Delta flight that day. It sounds like they're going to limit it to a certain number of visits per year, but they're still refining exactly what those changes are, like you said, but complimentary access to the lounge when you're flying Delta, as well as complimentary access to the American Express Centurion Lounge when you're flying Delta through this card.

[00:05:30] Spencer: Yeah, and then I think the best benefit of this card, if you're a serious Delta flyer, is the annual round trip companion pass. So after your first card anniversary year, so after you've had the card for one year, you can go first class, Delta Comfort, or domestic main cabin, and it's basically a buy one get one offer.

So you pay the taxes and mandatory fees, which is usually about 10, 15, 20 bucks, whatever it is, and you can get a round trip ticket only in the lower 48 states unless your SkyMiles profile address is Hawaii or Alaska. So if you're stationed in Hawaii or Alaska in the military, this can be an excellent way to use that round trip companion pass and get you and your partner, you and your spouse, you and a kid, you and whoever you designated as your companion back to your home state or just on vacation on Delta.

[00:06:17] Jamie: Yeah, we talked on the episode where I took my son to Orlando and we talked about the travel hacking of that a few weeks ago. We used our companion pass on that trip and saved $360, I think, dollars was the fare. It's not a huge savings, but it's free money with the buy one get one. One other thing I'll note on redeeming SkyMiles award flights with Delta is when you have this card, you'll get a 15% discount basically on your redemption cost on award travel.

So if you're going to use SkyMiles Redemption through Delta, which may or may not be the best option for you. We'll talk more about that in a second. Then you get a little bit of a discount just from being a card holder on that redemption.

[00:06:53] Spencer: Yeah, the card also has Global Entry or TSA pre-check credit. So you can sign up for either of those programs and then get reimbursed.

Military service members are probably better served signing up for Global Entry, because it comes with TSA PreCheck, and you already get free TSA PreCheck, and same thing for military spouses as well. And it's a program that's good for five years, and you can just use the credit again in five years. We talked in detail about Global Entry and TSA PreCheck in episode 85, both great programs.

I used it recently, and it probably saved me at least 45 minutes, if not an hour, of going through US Customs in Dublin.

[00:08:26] Jamie: So a lot of times when people see cards that offer free check bags, they scoff at it like, oh, no big deal. I don't really need that. A lot of times, unless you're traveling on orders, your spouse or your children are not going to be covered by a waived baggage policy, or you as a service member might have only two bags for free if you're on leisure travel.

So a card like this that comes with free checked bags, you can help out with your kid or your spouse that doesn't get the military benefit like you do unless you're traveling on orders together.

[00:08:53] Spencer: Yeah, and like most American Express cards, you're not going to pay foreign transaction fees when you use this card outside the United States.

But also, like most American Express cards, you're going to get much less acceptance, especially in Europe, Africa, Asia, than you would with a Visa or MasterCard. Another thing I'll note, Jamie, is that there are other tiers of Delta cards, so there's a Delta Platinum card from American Express, a Delta Gold card, and a Delta Blue card.

The Blue card has no annual fee, so if you have a Delta Reserve card, you leave active duty, and you want to downgrade your card and not pay the annual fee, you can downgrade it to a Delta Blue card. None of these other cards really have any great benefits. The Platinum card does have a domestic main cabin round trip companion certificate.

But the real trick is upgrading these cards to more reserve cards and unlocking more companion passes. Again, if you're a frequent Delta flyer, maybe you're Atlanta based or near Atlanta or near Delta hub, then you could really get a lot of value out of this card. I would tend to go to other American Express cards.

Like the Hilton card, the Marriott card, and I think you can get a lot more value out of those hotel cards than Delta Amex airline cards.

[00:10:05] Jamie: Yeah, one of the reasons this isn't our top overall recommended card, although it has some decent benefits, is one, you don't really earn much. You get three SkyMiles per dollar spent on Delta purchases and then only one SkyMile on everything else.

You can always earn Amex or Chase points on a better earning card. Like the American Express Gold for dining and eating out and groceries or the American Express Platinum for travel purchases and then transfer your points to Delta if you were to redeem through Delta. You can also redeem through travel partners.

So earning SkyMiles, one, we already mentioned they're not very valuable and two, this card is n
